Beginning therapy is a massive step towards improving your mental health and overall well-being. In every inquiry email I respond to I include that I’m am honored to have received the potential client’s message- because I truly am. The vulnerability and courage it takes to ask for help is not lost on me!
While I may not know a whole lot about investing on Wall Street- I do know a thing or two about investing in your mental health. And if you’re thinking about setting aside both your time and financial resources in order to make a change in your life… there are just some mistakes you can’t afford to make.
Consistency in therapy sessions is a non-negotiable. Regular sessions are essential for building trust, maintaining progress, and systematically addressing issues. Missing sessions or frequently rescheduling disrupts the process in more ways than you may realize:
To ensure you keep a consistent schedule, treat your therapy appointments as a non-negotiable commitment. Plan ahead, set reminders, and communicate with your therapist if you foresee any scheduling conflicts. Prioritizing your therapy sessions can significantly enhance the effectiveness of your treatment.
Additionally- don’t be afraid to ask during a consult call what your therapists’ schedule looks like! If you’re looking to invest, a therapist who has inconsistent availability or can only see you once every 8-12 weeks might not be a great fit.
Therapy is only as beneficial as your unedited expression and exploration of thoughts and feelings. However, many clients fall into the trap of trying to say what they think their therapist wants to hear. This can lead to misunderstandings, inaccurate treatment planning, and disappointment.
Remember, your therapist is there to help you navigate the changes you wish to see in your life. It’s impossible to navigate if we don’t have accurate data points. Embrace the vulnerability that comes with being open and truthful in your sessions.
I use the term “skills generalization” most often- because the goal is for the work we’re doing to be helpful NOT in the therapy office, but in your real relationships. Not using these skills between sessions can limit your progress because we may need to do furthering work or troubleshooting of challenges. Being able to bring this feedback into session helps to adjust strategies and improve effectiveness.
To integrate these skills into your life, set specific goals for practice, keep a journal (or diary card) of your experiences, and discuss any difficulties in session. Being proactive ensures that therapy extends beyond the session and becomes an integrated part of your daily routine.
While in-network therapists are often more affordable due to insurance coverage, limiting your search to only in-network providers can restrict your options and may prevent you from finding the best fit for your specific needs. Here’s why:
Prioritizing your specific therapeutic needs over your insurance provider’s options can lead to a more effective and personalized experience.
