In a world – and in a high achieving town- where we are often our own harshest critics, understanding the power of self-compassion can be transformative. Imagine speaking tenderly to yourself as if you were comforting a younger version of you, offering kindness and understanding. This is the essence of self-compassion, the practice of treating yourself with the same love and care you would give to a dear friend. Sometimes, this can be too much of a stretch, so I share with my clients that when I mess up and need a little compassion, I talk to myself the way I would speak to my niece.
Defining Compassion: Recognizing Suffering and Taking Action
At its core, compassion is the recognition of suffering and the desire to take action to alleviate it. When we extend this concept inward, we arrive at self-compassion.
It’s not about wallowing in self-pity or staying stuck in our emotions; it’s a gentle but direct approach to addressing our own suffering and moving forward in life.
Imagine a small child who is upset, hurt, or confused. How would you comfort them? You would likely offer a soothing voice, a reassuring hug, and words of encouragement. Self-compassion encourages us to treat ourselves in the same way. It’s about acknowledging our pain without judgment, just as we would with a child, and then taking steps to heal and grow.
Becoming Your Best Self: The Loving and Kind You
Self-compassion enables us to be our best selves, the most loving and kind version of who we can be. It allows us to develop a healthier relationship with ourselves- fostering a sense of self-worth-which leads to healthier relationships with those around us. When we practice self-compassion, we grant ourselves permission to make mistakes and learn from them, just as we would with a friend.
Self-compassion is the acceptance of what is, as it is, while still taking action to create the results we desire. It’s about embracing our imperfections and vulnerabilities, understanding that they are part of being human. Instead of being critical or avoiding our flaws, self-compassion encourages us to work with them, ultimately leading us toward personal growth and positive change.
